“If you can reach out and touch, and love, and be with wildlife, you will forever be changed, and you will want to make the world a better place…” Terri Irwin
What we understand and label ‘empathy’ incorporates into our psyche around the age of 3yrs. What exactly is empathy? The New Shorter Oxford explains it as:
“The power of mentally identifying oneself with, (and so fully comprehending), a person or object of contemplation; = Einfühlung.”
What I refer to as “The Steve & Terri Irwin concept” is fundamentally informed by empathy. It is foundational to what educational outreach with ‘Team Feathers’ is all about, and forms the very core of what we set out to achieve in introducing youngsters to live, free-flying birds-of-prey.
No two visits are exactly alike; teachers and principals sometimes ask us to emphasize owls, or discuss the science of aerodynamics, or raptor biology.
Our “conversational” format invites school-aged children to embrace their curiosity – to be the natural scientists we all innately are, to ask their own questions about ‘Sabre’, ‘Mohave’, ‘Jarih’ and their wild counterparts, and to discover and incorporate the answers in a fun, flexible and memorable atmosphere.
The Falconlady’s educational outreach program featuring “Team Feathers” travels to your location, and delivers programming and presentations unique to the environments into which we’ve been welcomed.
We are currently booking camp programs and school presentations for the Spring/Summer of 2012 – get in touch with The Falconlady early to see if we’ll be coming to your little corner of the province soon!
